How important in social media?

There is no doubt that 2009 has been the year of social media, especially in Australia.

Twitter has grown more than 6,000%, yes 6,000%. Around 800,000 Australians are now using Twitter.

Facebook has more than 6 million Australian members. That is around 25% of all Australians who use the internet. And even more staggering is that 29% of all time spent online by Australians is spent on Facebook.

LinkedIn recently surpassed the magic million number. More than 1.1 million Australians use this social platform for professionals.

So what does this mean for credit unions?
Experian Hitwise research shows that social media platforms are driving almost as much traffic to Banking & Financial Services sites as Search Engines; Google, Yahoo! and BING.

This represents an enormous change in customer behaviour. Whilst search engines endeavour to deliver the most relevant results to a given search, customers are increasingly using social media to either validate those findings or, to ask a ‘real person’ online.

So it comes down to who do customers trust more? The Google search algorithym which is designed to ‘think like a person’ and provide relevant results or someone like you who’s been through the same situation, for example looking for a home loan?

Increasingly customers are moving towards the latter behaviour.

The Experian Hitwise research shows that:

After visiting search engines, 3.7% of customers visit a site that is categorised as a ‘Banks and Financial Institution’.

After visting social media sites, 3.3% of customers visit a site that is categorised as a ‘Banks and Financial Institution’.

That’s only a 0.4% difference. With Facebook tipped to become Australia’s most popular site before the end of 2009, it is also expected that social media will play an increasingly significant role in how customers find, interact and engage with brands, including banks, credit unions and other financial services.
